Our Story

In 2021, Reverend Kendrick E. Curry, PhD set out to create an organization that drew from and built upon the strength of communities hit hardest by education inequality. Reverend Curry had a vision of not just organizing, but advocacy; a community that develops and supports leaders to take up positions of power in local government to better represent the needs of the people and create long-term stability for our community.

So Reverend Curry created ElectED DC, an organization enabling the collective voices of concerned community members to fight for better outcomes for DC students by creating a pipeline of leaders from and around Wards 7 & 8 who are equipped with the tools, resources, and support they need to advocate for their communities and put student needs first.

Our Theory of Change

Historically marginalized residents and communities in Ward 7 & 8 have a lack of political and electoral power, as well as lack of access to a high-quality education.

Our Vision

Enact a comprehensive agenda focused on dramatically improving outcomes for DC students and creating long-term stability for our community.

Our Mission

Engage community members East of the River in the work to support and develop political leadership, increase representation at all levels, and advocate for the policy conditions that will enable every DC student to thrive.

Community Engagement

ElectED will engage community members in Wards 7 & 8 and the surrounding area in the work to identify and advocate for local issues that positively impact student outcomes.

Building Political Power

ElectED will support existing leadership and create a pipeline of leaders from and around Wards 7 & 8 who are equipped with the tools, resources, and support they need to advocate for their communities and put student needs first.

The Urgency of Our Work to Improve Education in Wards 7 & 8

To the Communities East of the River and Our Allies Districtwide-

We are launching this organization to engage community members East of the River because we deserve to build political power, increase representation of historically marginalized communities at all levels, and advocate for the policy conditions that will enable every DC student to thrive. Simply put, we are committed to building political power in order to empower our communities.

Our goal is to build a pipeline of leaders from and around Wards 7 & 8 who are equipped with the tools, resources, and support they need to advocate for their communities and put student needs first.

As East of the River residents of Washington DC, we are immersed in the rich symbolism of freedom that our country projects to the world. ElectED DC proudly stands with our forebearers and colleagues to advocate for equitable access to quality resources. We commit to replacing anti-black, sexist, and other such policies that perpetuate barriers to a wealth-building future for our neighbors and their children.

Our deep connections to our history, an urgent sense of the present, and our bold aspirations for our future bring us together as friends in the movement for a more just DC education system. It is that spirit of understanding, urgency and hope that will drive all that we intend to do at ElectED DC.

We intend to highlight and interrogate the lived inequities of our communities, while at the same time working tirelessly to elevate and propel the aspirations and dreams of our people.

Our’s is a hopeful and determined commitment, to speak truth to power without flinching in the service of the people who call Wards 7 and 8 home. I am honored to have your support in our work, because with your partnership and shared determination to improve the conditions of life and social determinants of wellbeing, we can hope to achieve real and enduring success for our neighbors, children, and city.

Yours in Service and Faith,

Rev. Kendrick E. Curry, PhD.
